Some great matches and moments, one of the better Wrestlemanias this decade

  2. Brad Barrett Verified Purchase Review

With some of the top talent in the world, this Wrestlemania falls surprisingly short. Front loaded with the best matches, once Charlotte and Asuka are done – and with a vigorous nod to Ronda Rousey’s surprisingly enjoyable debut match – the rest of the card fails to excite. What could have been a remarkable and emotional return for Daniel Bryan after career-threatening injuries is instead thrown away on an ok tag team match without the necessary gravitas. A damp squib of a surprise partner for Braun Strowman and a lacklustre “big man” main event with Lesnar and Reigns (capable of much more as WM 31 proved) are the least egregious of disappointments in comparison to the big one: the most anticipated match on the card – a Wrestle Kingdom rematch between WWE Champion AJ Styles and Royal Rumble winner Shinsuke Nakamura. Rarely has a match so full of potential turned out to be so comparatively dull. Most people expected a masterpiece; we got, at best, a slightly blurred and askew pastiche. I’ve not been this disappointed in years. As a result, along with some medicore content from the John Cena / Undertaker surprise squash, to Nia Jax’s undeserved title match, this WM was both a step up and a step backwards from the two years previous.

NXT Takeover: New Orleans – which is included in this version of the release – was yet another escalation of the brand’s output. With two legitimate five star match of the year contenders, and two approaching that peak, and an NXT Women’s Championship on par with the WM showcase between Charlotte and Asuka, this is an essential event that more than makes up for the disappointment of WM. It is the diametric opposite in terms of quality, build and reward.

Get this for the Intercontinental, Smackdown Women’s matches, the novelty of Ronda Rouset’s debut. and the entirety of NXT Takeover: New Orleans.
